Kerala Food Festival Success | August 14, 2009
It’s been a very exciting month for the Mint and Mustard, following the launch of Cardiff’s first ever Kerala Food Festival. We have been absolutely delighted with the response from our customers to our innovative Kerala menu which was personally created by Chef Anand George.
A very special party was held last week to commemorate this festival with guests including MP Rhodri Morgan and his wife Julie Morgan, together with a wonderful ensemble of friends, journalists, critics and businesses who have followed us and supported us since our launch in 2007.
Chef Anand George and his team didn’t disappoint with their culinary skills by creating a spectacular feast including tangy duck roast and mouth watering lamb stew which received glowing reviews. Read the reviews on the Western Mail online and Echo online. The exotic menu also included classic ingredients from his home town of Kerala in South India such as fresh coconut and authentic spices.
To sample some of the delights from our specially created Kerala menu, which is available until August 23rd, call us now to reserve a table.

Chef Anand Goes Back to Roots with Kerala Food Festival at Mint & Mustard | July 12, 2009

Chef Anand George Launches his first Kerala Festival on 23rd July
Chef Anand George, founder of Mint & Mustard, is going back to his roots with a personal tribute to the home-cooking that inspired his rise to culinary fame – by launching the first ever Kerala Cardiff Food Festival.
Running for a month from July 23rd, the Festival will celebrate cuisine unique to the region on the Southern Coast of India, renowned for its seafood specialities and dishes featuring coconut, plantains and spices only found in the locality.
Chef George has created an entirely new menu for his restaurant especially for the month. Chef Anand George said: “We have been overwhelmed by the reaction from Welsh people since choosing Cardiff to be the birthplace of our restaurant and our aim of re-defining Indian cuisine.
I believe people will be intrigued to learn more about the traditional home-style and street snack cooking of my home region and we will put on a real show by introducing dishes that have never been experienced in Wales before.”
Chef George was born in Kerala, and took an early interest in cooking at the family home. He progressed his career in the Five Star hotels of Mumbai before re-locating to the UK where he honed his skills in a number of leading Indian restaurants in London. Chef George has now established his family home in Cardiff.
We will shortly be adding a full Festival menu to the website for your delectation!

Our Award-Winning Chef Sits on Other Side of Judging Table at True Taste Awards! | June 24, 2009
Chef Anand George – Mint & Mustard’s award-winning maestro – has been sampling some of Wales’ best culinary delights as an expert judge at the heats of the True Taste Awards!
The awards – which celebrate the development of inspiring food and drink in Wales – took place in Horeb, North Wales on 18th June, with categories ranging from meat and poultry to confectionary.
Each item was judged on extensive criteria, taking into account the combination of ingredients, quality of production and overall appeal of the product as well as its relevance to its target market and customer base.
Chef George said: “It was a new and exciting experience sampling food as a judge rather than as a competitor at these awards. The judging panel sampled a total of 80 desserts over the course of one day – which was a big, but enjoyable undertaking!
“Acting as a judge is not just about an acute knowledge of ingredients and taste, but also about understanding the consumer – their preferences, trends and budget – something that is of prime importance during this difficult economic time.”
He added, “The breadth and quality of food on offer in Wales is outstanding, and this is something that the True Taste awards endeavour to showcase. At our Mint and Mustard restaurant, we use locally sourced ingredients to create innovative Indian dishes – a fusion of cultures that we are proud of.”
The True Taste Awards final – which boasts a total of 7 categories – will take place on 8th July in Cardiff, with an official awards ceremony to congratulate the winners in November.

Mint and Mustard is a Hot Success as Restaurant Doubles in Size | January 9, 2009
A FINE-DINING Indian restaurant has invested in a major expansion – doubling in size and creating jobs.
Mumbai-trained and former London chef Anand George chose Wales to locate the first Mint & Mustard Indian restaurant in December last year.
The Whitchurch Road establishment has since won two national culinary awards this year which has further increased trade in the second half of the year.
The chef from Kerala, on the coast of south-west India, this year won the House of Commons Tiffin Cup and the South Asian Chef of the Year award.
Mr George said: “Wales has proven to be a winning location for our first project – we are consistently fully booked, which has necessitated bringing forward plans to extend the restaurant. We have completed a significant investment in doubling our floor space to accommodate 60 seats and enlarging our kitchen to meet increased output. We have also created new jobs with both extra waiting and kitchen staff.”
The refurbishment includes an interior re-design of the restaurant with new seating, tables and flooring, as well as the building of a garden room extension which is also equipped with audio visual facilities for corporate events.
Mr George won the Tiffin Cup, for the UK’s best curry house, with his signature pan-fried sea bass on a bed of curry leaf infused mashed potato and raw mango and ginger sauce.
He is planning a range of business developments for next year.
He added: “We have found a successful niche for our vision of bringing fine Indian dining to the Welsh capital, but we will not stand still.
“We have a loyal customer base, many of whom are business people and we will be introducing corporate catering and master- class cooking events which are ideal for hospitality and team building.”
